A shed by the Seto Inland Sea
Tadao Mori buys four second-hand Toyoda looms and starts weaving work cloth for Kojima uniform makers. The mill is one room, one dye pot and a bicycle for deliveries.

The first rope-dye line
Demand for indigo work trousers outgrows hank dyeing. A six-dip rope range goes in, and the white-core yarn that defines the house handle arrives with it.

Refusing the wide loom
When the industry moves to projectile looms, the mill keeps its 30-inch shuttles. Output halves. The selvedge — and the customers who care about it — stay.

Closing the water loop
A reverse-osmosis plant is built behind the dye house. Ninety-two per cent of process water now returns to production instead of the river.
